ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

ACWA invites diplomats from embassies of countries that are important partners with the U.S., both in trade and politics, and long-term in addressing important global challenges. ACWA originated this program in 2005. View archives of previous participants.

In addition to the formal evening event, diplomats participate in ACWA's award-winning Global Scholars program for high-school students. ACWA also arranges sessions with executives and economists engaged in global trade in Northeast Ohio. The content of all programs is developed specifically for ACWA program attendees.

Finland Today — Arctic Region Development Strategy: Opportunities & Safeguards

Ann-Sofie Stude will discuss the complex issues related to the impact of global climate change in the Arctic region. The change in the Arctic is progressing at more than twice the rate compared to the rest of the globe.

Ms. Stude will provide perspective on

  • Finland's unique focus and expertise based on its proximity to the Arctic Region and the opportunities this presents to the country's industries and to overseas investors.
  • The goals of the eight cooperating states, including the U.S. with Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, includes safeguarding their legal territorial rights while seeking to curb a "gold rush" approach to the Arctic's resources and the opening of new routes by other parties.
  • How indigenous people living in the Arctic Region are participating in decisions that will affect them.

In addition, Ms. Stude will present an overview of Finland's education system which annually has students outperforming students in other countries, including the U.S.

  • How Finland's unique history has facilitated decisions that support outstanding student performance
  • How the Finnish language simplifies students learning to read
  • Finland's commitment to its citizens' preparation for careers that support its economy, including new
    opportunities related to Arctic development
