Proposed U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement: Economic Opportunity and Strategic Imperative

The proposed U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) is considered the most significant trade deal in more than a decade. Passage would immediately open new access to U.S. goods and services in South Korea, presently the U.S.' seventh-largest trading partner.

Experts assert that the FTA will bring new energy and vitality to the U.S.-Korea partnership, an alliance critical to regional and global security.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Ohio's small and medium-sized manufacturers stand to gain particular benefits from the tariff-eliminating provisions of this agreement. It would level the significant tariff imbalance that favors Korean exporters over U.S. exporters.

The FTA would open new markets for Ohio exports of chemicals, transportation machinery and more, and it would eliminate tariffs on most state agricultural products. The proposed agreement faces obstacles to ratification in both Washington and Seoul.

ACWA's trade program is in two parts:

  1. ACWA's special guest, Dongman Han, Minister-Counselor for Economic Affairs, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Washington, D.C. He will provide perspective on the pending FTA, including factors influencing its passage.
  2. How to access the services of the U.S. Export Assistance Center - U.S. Department of Commerce and other government agencies to support your export goals.

Who Should Attend: Any manufacturer or service provider that would like an overview of U.S. Commercial Services that support export and/or want updating on investment opportunities.
