Proposed U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement: Economic Opportunity and Strategic Imperative

The proposed U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) is considered the most significant trade deal in more than a decade. Passage would immediately open new access to U.S. goods and services in South Korea, presently the U.S.' seventh-largest trading partner.

Experts assert that the FTA will bring new energy and vitality to the U.S.-Korea partnership, an alliance critical to regional and global security.

SPEAKER PROFILE

Dongman Han

Mr. Han serves as Minister-Counselor for Economic Affairs of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Washington, D.C. He previously served in Seoul as Senior Coordinator for Trade Policy and Public Relations in the Korean Foreign Ministry.

Previously, Mr. Han served as Economic Consul at the Korean Consulate General in New York, and in the Foreign Ministry as a Director of Security Policy Division in Seoul, attending multilateral security conferences, including Northeast Asia Security Dialogue and ASEAN Regional Forum.

Mr. Han has served in Algeria, the United Kingdom and Australia.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

ACWA invites diplomats from embassies of countries that are important partners with the U.S., both in trade and politics, and long-term in addressing important global challenges. ACWA originated this program in 2005. View archives of previous participants.

In addition to the formal evening event, diplomats participate in ACWA's award-winning Global Scholars program for high-school students. ACWA also arranges sessions with executives and economists engaged in global trade in Northeast Ohio. The content of all programs is developed specifically for ACWA program attendees.

U.S.–South Korean Relations: Stabilizing Northeast Asia

Dongman Han, Minister-Counselor for Economic Affairs, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Washington, D.C.

The U.S. and South Korea are at a critical turning point in both economic and political relations. With a US $1 trillion economy, South Korea is the U.S.' seventh-largest trading partner. At the same time, 28,000 U.S. troops remain deployed in the country. Stability in Northeast Asia hinges on this vital alliance.

A new chapter in U.S.-Korea relations offers the potential to significantly and permanently upgrade not only bilateral economic relations but important strategic initiatives.

Trade relations continue to present significant challenges and opportunities. The proposed U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, KORUS FTA, is seen by many as imperative to both countries' competitiveness, regional leadership and security. The FTA faces obstacles to ratification in both Washington and Seoul.
